Otoplasty San Francisco
Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping or ear surgery, can be performed to reduce the size, reposition, and reshape the appearance of large, prominent, protruding, or deformed ears. Otoplasty can give the ears a more balanced appearance in relation to the whole face, make them appear more symmetrical, and more. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Chiu Collins specializes in procedures of the head and neck and can provide you with natural-looking results from your otoplasty in San Francisco.
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping surgery, is a procedure to change the shape, position, or size of the ears. It is a very reliable procedure with an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction. Otoplasty is a good choice for someone who is bothered by how far their ears stick out from their head. It is also very good for patients with ears that are large in proportion to their head.
When to Consider Otoplasty
A prominent ear shape is something that is noticeable from birth. Given the high chance of school-age children being teased and ridiculed by their classmates, it is very acceptable for a child or teenager to undergo otoplasty. One might also consider otoplasty if their ear has been misshapen by an injury.
Otoplasty does not change the location of your ears or your ability to hear.
Am I a candidate for otoplasty?
Good candidates for otoplasty should be in good general health and should have realistic expectations. Otoplasty can be used to address ear deformities from birth or to correct issues caused by damage to the ear.
Otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears have reached their adult size— usually any time after the age of six.
If you or your child is interested in a facial analysis and an assessment of your candidacy for otoplasty, we invite you to our office for a consultation with Dr. Chiu-Collins. She will formulate a plan that is unique to only you, and take the time to help you understand the issues, rationale, pros/cons, and expected recovery.
Otoplasty or Ear Reshaping Surgery
Otoplasty surgery lasts 1-2 hours for both ears. It is very well tolerated under local anesthesia. For children, we usually recommend IV sedation or general anesthesia. A small incision is made behind the ear and usually completely undetectable after surgery.
Recovery from Otoplasty or Ear Reshaping Surgery
The first 2 days are typically spent with the patient taking it easy at home. Local bruising and swelling are minimal and may last for a few days. Most patients can return to work within a few days. Soreness and swelling may be worse in the morning, and are significantly reduced by sleeping with the head of bed elevated on extra pillows. Pain relievers help with post-operative soreness.
The Cost of Otoplasty
The cost of your or your child’s otoplasty in San Francisco will be determined by several different factors. During your initial consultation, Dr. Chiu-Collins will go over the details of the procedure, let you know what the expected cost of your otoplasty will be, and will go over the payment options we offer.
Always A Team Approach
When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Chiu-Collins will walk you through every step of the process, from education and facial analysis, to pretreatment instructions, the treatment itself, and what to expect afterwards.
