Chin reshaping surgery, also called Genioplasty or Mentoplasty, is a great option for people interested in augmenting the shape or size of their chin. A chin implant is the most common and most reliable method for reshaping the chin. For someone with a small chin, a chin implant can offer a significant aesthetic improvement while still providing a somewhat subtle change that many outsiders are unable to detect. Many of our chin implant patients return to us postoperatively telling us that their friends have asked them, “Have you been working out?”, “Have you lost weight?”, “Are you doing your hair differently?”, or just plain “You look great.” The majority of our older chin implant patients report that they wish they had undergone their chin procedure earlier in life: “Why didn’t I do this sooner?!”

Am I a candidate for a chin implant?

Every person’s anatomy is different. Gender, skin texture, neck and jaw anatomy are just a few things that determine candidacy for a chin implant. In the right candidate, a chin implant may also be a nice complement for someone already undergoing rhinoplasty. If you are interested in a facial analysis and an assessment of your candidacy for surgical chin implant, we invite you to our office for a consultation with Dr. Chiu-Collins. She will formulate a plan that is unique to only you, and take the time to help you understand the issues, rationale, pros/cons, and expected recovery.

Chin Implant Surgery

Chin Implant surgery lasts about 1 hour. It is performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. A very small incision is made under the chin. This heals extremely well and is typically undetectable by others. Chin implant surgery may be performed during the same surgical sitting as other procedures, like rhinoplasty, facelift or neck lift. The decision for anesthesia is based on patient preference, health status, and the duration of surgery.

Recovery from Chin Implant Surgery

The first 2 days are typically spent with the patient taking it easy at home. Bruising and swelling are minimal and may last for several days. Most patients can return to work by 5 days. Soreness and swelling may be worse in the morning, and are significantly reduced by sleeping with the head of bed elevated on extra pillows. Pain relievers help with post-operative soreness.

Always A Team Approach

When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Chiu-Collins will walk you through every step of the process, from education and facial analysis, to pretreatment instructions, the treatment itself, and what to expect afterwards.
